Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing West Valley Businesses Customers

Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing West Valley Businesses Customers

Your Google Business Profile is often the very first thing a potential customer sees, before they ever visit your website. And most small businesses in the West Valley are leaving it half-finished.

Here are the mistakes we see most often, and what to do instead.

1. Picking the wrong primary category

Your primary category carries more ranking weight than almost anything else on your profile. “Web Designer” and “Website Design Company” are technically similar but treated differently by Google. Picking the closest, most specific match to what you actually do matters more than people realize.

2. Letting the profile go stale

A profile with no posts, no new photos, and no updates in six months signals to Google (and to customers) that the business might not be active. Regular Google Posts, even simple ones, keep the profile looking alive and give Google fresh content to index.

3. Ignoring reviews, good or bad

Responding to every review, not just the negative ones, is a real ranking and trust signal. A business with 40 reviews and zero owner responses looks less engaged than one with 15 reviews and thoughtful replies to each.

4. Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone)

If your business name, address, or phone number is even slightly different across your website, your GBP, and directory listings, that inconsistency actively hurts your local ranking. Google cross-references this data, and mismatches create doubt.

5. No photos, or outdated ones

Profiles with recent, real photos (not stock images) get more clicks and more direction requests. If your most recent photo is from three years ago, that’s worth fixing today, not eventually.

6. Not using the Q&A section

Most business owners don’t know they can seed their own Google Business Profile Q&A section with real questions customers actually ask. Left empty, random users sometimes post inaccurate answers instead.

The fix isn’t complicated, it’s just neglected

None of this requires a redesign or a big budget. It requires someone actually managing the profile on an ongoing basis instead of setting it up once and forgetting about it. That ongoing management is usually the difference between a GBP that quietly helps you and one that quietly costs you customers. Here is how we handle Google Business Profile management for West Valley businesses.
