What to Actually Look for When Hiring a Web Designer in Arizona

What to Actually Look for When Hiring a Web Designer in Arizona

Hiring a web designer feels like picking a stranger to represent your business online, because that’s basically what it is. Here’s what actually matters when you’re deciding who to trust with it.

Ask who you’ll actually be working with

Some agencies sell you on a senior designer in the pitch meeting, then hand your project to a junior team member or an offshore contractor once the deposit clears. Ask directly: “Who will I actually be talking to during this project?” A vague answer is a red flag.

Ask if SEO is part of the build or a separate upsell

A website built without local SEO structure baked in from day one, proper schema, clean URL architecture, mobile-first design, is a website you’ll likely have to pay someone to fix later. Ask specifically whether SEO fundamentals are part of the build itself.

Ask what platform they’re building on, and what that means for you

WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, custom code, each comes with real tradeoffs in speed, flexibility, and whether you actually own what gets built. If a designer can’t clearly explain why they’re recommending a specific platform for your specific situation, that’s worth a follow-up question.

Ask to see real, live examples of their work, not just screenshots

A portfolio page with static screenshots doesn’t tell you how a site actually performs. Ask for live links you can click through yourself, and actually test them on your phone. Do they load fast? Are they easy to navigate? Would you want to be represented by something like this? You can click through our live client sites the same way.

Ask what happens after launch

Some agencies disappear the moment the invoice clears. Others treat a website as a living asset that needs ongoing attention. Ask directly what support, if any, exists after launch, and get it in writing if it matters to you.

The biggest red flag: no local presence at all

A lot of “Phoenix web design” companies aren’t actually based in Phoenix, or anywhere in Arizona. That’s not automatically disqualifying, but it does mean you should ask harder questions about whether they genuinely understand the local market you’re trying to reach, or whether you’re one of hundreds of identical clients across the country.

The right questions upfront save you from a redesign in eighteen months. Here is what goes into our new website builds.
