Website Ownership: Why "Free" Website Builders Can Cost You More Later

Website Ownership: Why "Free" Website Builders Can Cost You More Later

“Free” website builders aren’t really free. They’re free to start, and expensive to leave. Here’s what that actually looks like in practice.

You don’t own what you build

Platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and similar drag-and-drop builders host your site on their infrastructure, using their proprietary system. If you ever want to switch providers, redesign with someone else, or move to something more flexible, you often can’t just “take your site with you.” You’re starting over.

You’re locked into their pricing, forever

The low monthly fee that got you in the door has a way of climbing as you add features, remove their branding, or need more storage and bandwidth. There’s no negotiating, no alternative provider, just their pricing structure, indefinitely.

Your SEO ceiling is lower than you think

Many builder platforms limit how much control you have over technical SEO, page speed optimization, schema markup, clean URL structure, custom code when you need it. You’re working within whatever their system allows, not what actually gets you found.

What real ownership looks like instead

A site built on an open framework (we use Astro, a modern, genuinely open-source technology, not a proprietary platform) means:

  • You own the actual files. If you ever want to leave, your site and your content leave with you.
  • No platform lock-in pricing. Hosting costs are transparent and competitive, not a captive monthly fee.
  • Full technical control. Nothing about your SEO or performance is capped by what a builder’s system allows.

When a builder platform genuinely makes sense

To be fair, not every business needs custom development. A very early-stage business testing an idea with zero budget might reasonably start on a free builder. The problem is when a growing, established business stays there out of habit, or because nobody explained the actual tradeoff at the start.

If your business has outgrown “good enough for now,” that’s usually the moment ownership starts mattering a lot more than convenience.
